A Camera in you car
About a year ago a friend of mine backed into a car in a parking lot. As he got out of his car to check the damage, he noticed that while his car had a minor bruise, the other car didn’t have a scratch on it – that is where my friend’s car bumped into his. He did notice that there was a dent in another part of the bumper. Luckily for him, it was rusted in that spot, so he knew for sure that it wasn’t from his car. Before he got out a pad of paper to write them a note with his car insurance information, he took a picture of the damage to his car and the damage to the other car, to keep for his records if he heard from the other car owner. He was lucky that his cell phone had a camera on it. If he hadn’t taken a picture, he might have been contacted by this person and demanded to fix the “damage”. My suggestion, carry a throw away camera in your car and put a label on that says, “For emergencies only”. You never know when you may need one. Also, ask your insurance company for an accident report form. This has all the information you need to remember to ask in case of an accident: insurance numbers, addresses, and the details of the accident. Wrap it around the camera with a pen. Of course, if there's any dispute or anyone might be hurt, call the police before you do anything else!

Friday's Deal Mail!
(7/23/04)Welcome to an absolutely stunningly gorgeous weekend here in the Pacific Northwest. The weather we're having now is the reason people move the the West Coast (or FL!) Beautiful, sunny, and hot through the weekend. However, considering that most of us out here don't have A/C, any hotter and we'll all head for the hills like lemmings...Since its so nice, I think the people who come up with the good deals must be on vacation. I actually had a little time to put the dealmail together today but couldn't find that much to include... What I did find was pretty good though, so enjoy!
What's the best killer deal this week, you ask? How about something to help you figure out how to pay for everything you've bought off of the dealmail?! Amazon got a special buy from Microsoft on MS Money software. This software is a great resource to help you get a handle on all of your finances, budget your expenses, and plan out how to do big purchases (like a house.) I can personally vouch for it since I started using it a year ago and keep practically everything in there. Its an excellent tool that was super-easy to install and even easier to use. The deal? It started out at nearly $60 but, because the new version is coming out, is selling now for *$5.99*!!!!! You can hardly go wrong at that price.
Microsoft Money 2003 Deluxe
The second deal is something that literally just went up on Amazon this week. They just started carrying .25ct diamond earrings, and this pricing is amazing. The small earrings are perfect for a spontaneous gift for a friend or girlfriend, and are made of 14K gold with a round diamond, J color or better, set in the center. Unbelievably, they are actually selling for $69 including shipping in a nice gift box.
14k Yellow Gold Round Diamond Stud Earrings
*Today Only* Its Friday and its been forever since I featured a cordless phone, right? J&R, and Amazon merchant, is featuring a 2.4 GHz phone with caller ID and a digital answering machine for more than 60% off list, at $34.88. If you need a phone, this seems like a great deal and a good way to get 2.4 GHz functionality cheap price.
AT&T 2.4 GHz Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Caller ID (Espresso)
If you know anyone who needs an inexpensive vacuum, there is a great price on the Hoover bagless Tempo Upright. Since there's no reviews on Amazon, I looked around on the internet and found tons of people who were recommending this on other sites as an excellent deal. This one is 40% off today only.
Hoover Tempo Upright Bagless Vacuum, Yukon Yellow
There's been a ton of press recently about the DVD camcorders that record directly onto DVD so you don't have to transfer it once you get home. These things ar eabout the hottest thing going on right now in the videocamera world and it is really hard to find them discounted anywhere. Today only, J&R is selling the Hitachi DZMV580A DVD camcorder for $200 off retail ($699.) This baby has 10X optical zoom, can record in widescreen mode, a 2.5" display, and can record almost 2 hours of video onto a single DVD. It can also take pictures and film in low light and it will let you edit your film right in the camera. A great price if you've been waiting for the right deal to jump on.
HITACHI DZMV580A DVD Camcorder
If the heat is getting to you now that we're almost into August, with plenty left to go, you may want to consider a window mount fan to get the air going. This one is under $13 and seems like it just might do the trick for most. (At $13, its cheaper than the screens I put into my windows, and they don't even circulate the air!)
HOLMES Twin Window Fan
Since the weather is so nice, there's been a ton of BBQing going on. If your tools are wearing out, you can get a whole new set, in their own dedicated case for 64% off today only. At $18, these would make a great no-brainer gift for your favorite griller...(Did I mention it includes a free mit?)
Charcoal Companion 19-Piece Stainless-Steel Barbecue Set with Bonus Grill Mitt
Its been a while since I featured any knife sets. Since I know that so many of you are going through withdrawal on this, I thought I'd dig a few out of the deal cupboard for today. First, a really nice budget set by a major brand name, Henckel, for under $40.
Henckels International Traditional 5-Piece Knife Block Set
Next, the absolute dream set that everyone wishes that they had gotten for their wedding (or doesn't want to wait for their wedding to get) at 41% off!
Wüsthof Classic 10-Piece Cooking Couple's Knife Set with Block
Last product? Under the category of, "I can't believe that this would actually work..."

With permission of my colleague Dan, I am posting his fabulous log. Enjoy and learn...

Buying tuls on Ebay
Ebay is a strange place. I went looking for planers on ebay, and discovered this Dewalt DW735 planer for $455. What's strange about that? Well, here's the same planer on Amazon for $479.99. More expensive? Slightly. But since shipping is free ($39 from the ebay guy) and Amazon is an actual company that's somewhat less likely to vanish in the middle of the night on a midnight trip to vegas with your benchtop planer, one might have cause to think that the bidders who drove this planer up from $1 to $455 were completely insane.
So what's a penny-pinching woodworker to do? Simple. Don't search for planers. Search for planrs, plainers, playners... have a couple of beers and let your mind roam free. It turns out that many ebay sellers are spelling-impaired, and their confusion is your gain. With less competition driving up the price, there's real deals to be had. For example, a quick search for 'drils' yields a bounty of bargains, including an 18v Bosch drill ("one battery is almost new, the other one dont work neither does the charger, carrying case"). This would be going for at least double had he spelled it correctly.
The basic idea here is that efficient markets are the bargain hunter's enemy. The less bidders, the better. So whether you need a sandr, joyner, resiprikating saw, or just a set of forester bits, don't forget to commune with your inner dyslexic. You'll thank me for it.
Notes:
(The Wall Street Journal had an article on this recently, but I've been using this trick for years.)
(Yes, the quote on the Bosch drill was verbatim--ebay item #3803847638.)
(Actually, I find my very best deals in the local classifieds. Ironically, they charge way more than ebay to list items. Be prepared to deal with a lot of people who are not exactly email-savvy, though).

Friday's Deal Mail
(7/16/04)Welcome to another gorgeous weekend, and of course, a weekly deal mail that I know you can't live without... ;-) As always, lets start this sucker off with a bang: The first item has a great title *and* its a killer deal. Who wouldn't want to be mistaken for James Bond while using their "Godinger" Martini Set?! Even if you're pretty sure you don't need an excuse to drink any more, check this one out. Its a great price at 75% off and it would make a great gift even if you can't use it yourself. Check it out at only $20
Godinger Martini Set
Now, since its crazy-hot for most of my deal mail readers and you are all just trying to survive through August, I thought I'd feature two deals on high quality fans, for those that need them. The first is a trusty Vornado. You know, the little tiny fans that make you feel like the guy in the, "Is it live or is it Memorex" ad because of how much wind they put off? This is a great deal on one for 42% off (under $35
Vornado 550B Compact Air Circulator
The second fan deal is *today only* and, while its a tiny bit more expensive than the Vornado, its got the cool tower design and even a remote control so you don't have to get out of bed to turn it on/off. Oh, did I mention that its 50% off? :-) That's right, it started at almost 80 bucks and is now under $40..
Bionaire BT45RC-UC Remote Control Tower Fan
Now, for a few things that I found this week that I really, really liked. They might be a little spendier than most things on the dealmail, but they are all on great sale. First is this really sweet little "Executive Microsystem." (That's the industry name for pretty little bookshelf radio with really nice sound.) I happen to have one by JVC and I love the way it fills the room with sound. This one is on sale for more than 40% off and is really small and attractive, with a 5 disc CD player, good power, and pretty, wood grain speakers which complement the look quite nicely. Did I mention the 4 and 5 star reviews?
JVC FS-B70 Executive Microsystem (Dark Wood)
This next one is a really well reviewed photo printer (4.5 stars!) from Canon that even comes with its own LCD screen so you can print store-quality photos at home without even having to load them into your PC first. This prints beautifully and, after the rebate, its almost half off! (This one was even an "Early Adopters" pick on Amazon at the end of last year for its excellent use of technology and printing
Canon i900D Photo Printer
Last high-end item? This one is gorgeous: The brand new, hardly discounted anywhere, Dyson caniser vacuum is finally on sale somewhere (and it happens to be at Amazon!) As those of you who know about Dysons already know, they are an entirely new kind of vacuum that is remaking this whole industry. They are really high quality, excellent at getting allergens and dirt off just about anything. The canister is tiny, goes almost anywhere, and has an extendable hose that folds right back into the housing. Did I mention that I did a search on the web and its selling *today only* for $50 less than I could find it anywhere else? If you want to know more, click the link and read the description. Its really well written for this one

Friday's Deal Mail
(7/9/04)Well, its Friday again and since I can't claim "holiday weekend" or vacation-on-the-brain this week, I need to get cracking on the deal mail.
There's lots of good, random deals this week. First, I'll start off with a really, really nice set of Sennheiser stereo headphones. If you listen to music on the go or at work, it really makes a difference to have a good pair of headphones. Sennheiser is about as good as it gets and its rare to find them at such a good price. These babies are 50% off and a steal (limited supply on these, so if you are at all interested, I'd grab them.)
Sennheiser "Fusion" Full-Size Headphones (Black)
The second deal is one I couldn't resist featuring - Mostly because I *love* these things... Think Dick Tracy but better - They are wrist-watch sized family radios (like you see people bringing everywhere these days.) They act as a normal watch but are also a great way to have a walkie talkie when you don't want to have to keep it in a pocket or dig it out of your bag when you want to use it. They work great and they're cheap! What more could you want?! :-)
XACT Wristwatch Communicator (Silver)
For a change, how about some home and garden items, since I so rarely feature them. *Today only* there is an absolutely incredible price on a patio umbrella and stand. Normally, the umbrella alone sells for $200 and the base is another $100. If you buy it before the end of the day today, you get both for $80!!! Get it while its hot!
Oxford Garden Designs 9-Foot Garden Market Umbrella, Green
Since we're already talking about spending more time in the garden, I thought it would be great to also feature this fantastic deal on the all wood Adirondack chair by Strathwood. This is a great brand name in furniture and they are almost always sold out by mid-season on Amazon. This particular chair comes with a matching foot rest and, today only, is 40% off and under $90! (Started at almost $150!)
Strathwood Adirondack Set
OK - So another category that I never feature is jewelry. I know, I know..."Amazon does jewelry!?". So Amazon does tons of jewelry, including some really competetive prices on engagement rings and daimond earrings. Anyway, I did some digging and found some really good deals that I thought I would feature this week. The first is a pearl bracelet that looks really beautiful, has a 14K gold clasp, and sells for under $50. A really great deal if you need a small present for someone special.
Freshwater Cultured Pearl 5.5-6.0mm Bracelet, 7"
On the flip side, if you need a really special gift for someone, I know what I'd want if I was her. The third best selling item in the jewelry store right now is this beautiful set of platinum .5ct diamond earrings. They are really stunning, are G color or better, and come in a beautiful wood box (they are really nice - I bought Jen something this year and she still uses the box to keep it in.) Anyway, its a great price for a beautiful piece.
Platinum Certified Princess Cut Diamond Stud Earrings (1/2ct tw, G, VS2)
What kind of dealmail would it be without some kitchen items thrown in for good measure? Anyone need some cookie sheets? How about two? There's a fantastic price on a nice set by Calphalon on Amazon today that is going like hotcakes. They are 60% off and a great deal.
Calphalon Commercial Bakeware Collector's Edition Large Cookie Sheets
OK, OK, I know the 90s are over and I should stop living in them, but I *still* love my breadmaker and use it all the time... If you've ever wanted one, this is a great time to pick one up without a big pricetag... The Breadman Ultimate Bread Machine normally sells for almost $230 but it is on sale for *today only* at under $80! This has great reviews and its even ships free!
Breadman TR2200C Ultimate Bread Machine
The final kitchen item? This one is really sweet: One of the hottest names in handmade glassware, Spiegelau, makes tons of beautiful, swanky glasses. A bunch of their stuff is on huge sale on amazon right now, including this amazing martini glass set. Check them out at almost half off!
Spiegelau Vino Grande Martini Glasses, Set of 6
The last "normal" item on the list today? I'm sure you've heard of the "all-in-one" machines that scan, copy, and fax. HP is one of the big names with these and there is an unbelievable price on one of their higher end models right now, selling it for about what I paid just for my fax machine! Check it out for under $200!
HP OfficeJet 5510 All-In-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier
Last TWO items? Why two? Because I couldn't resist either of these and had to put the both it. For the first one. For the guy that you know that has absolutely everything, including his own "man cave" to watch sports or play poker in, this is most likely the only thing that's missing (at least I hope it is...) :-)
Mystery Item #1
Last product? Well, this one is just unbelievable... Check out the product and watch the accompanying videos for this one

Last product? Well, this one is just unbelievable... Check out the product and watch the accompanying videos for this one

Think identity theft can’t happen to you? The author, Frank Abagnale of Catch me if you can writes a list of ten ways to avoid identity theft:

Below is an overview of the article:
1. Destroy any public knowledge of your social security number. Ask whomever is asking for your social security number if they really need it. If they do, ask that they shred the documents right in front of you when applicable.
2. Keep a close eye on your credit report. Find a company that can send you your credit report without getting points taken off. Did you know that every time you have your credit checked by a creditor you lose a point on your credit rating?
3. Purchase a confetti shredder. Keep it near where you open your daily mail. You are more likely to shred that way.
4. Take your name off marketing lists, such as Equifax (a company who does credit reports).
5. NEVER carry your social security card on you, nor other financial records. If you need your social security card for a new job, be sure to return it to a safe place, such as a safety deposit box.
6. Keep a copy of your passport, social security card, birth certificate and other important documents in a safe place.
7. Mail bills at a post office, not your own mail box, unless you have a neighborhood mail box that is locked.
8. Actually read your social security benefits statements!
9. Always double check your credit card billing statement with your receipts to insure they are charges you made.
10. NEVER give personal information to a caller who claims to be your bank or credit card service. Instead, look up their number and call them back.
